I remember clearly.  I was duty officer sitting in the pre-commissioning office of the USS Dace (SSN 607).  Sister ship, USS Thresher (SSN 593), sank in 8400 feet of water with 129 souls.   This was my first ship after graduating Sub School and I was truly a non-qual nub; but the magnitude of the loss hit me hard and never left me.

The ship was found and theories offered as to why… Poor design and failure to properly respect the power of God’s world were factors.  The weight of 1000 feet of water was easy to calculate but understanding what it could do was not in the calculations.  Rest in Peace John Grafton and 128 others…

Apparently the surgeon did not remove enough of my arm to satisfy the pathologists, so I have to back in today for further weight reduction.  Fun…

Now I hear the Navy is talking of perhaps reinstating Capt. Crozier to his former position of Commanding Officer.  I am embarrassed and humiliated at the incompetence of the Navy Chain of command.  I am beginning to think what the Navy needs is to become a branch of the US Marine Corps…

And then there is the US Government…
